VENEZUELA
Protesters gain popular support
CARACAS -- A majority of Venezuelans support student protests over the closure of an opposition television channel, a poll showed Sunday, despite President Hugo Chavez's insistence that the demonstrations were part of a U.S. plot to topple him.
Mr. Chavez replaced RCTV, the country's oldest broadcaster, with a state network last month. Since then, thousands of students have held regular protests accusing the president of undermining democracy in the nation, a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
A Datos poll of 600 Venezuelans across social classes found that 56.2 percent supported the students and 23.8 percent opposed them.
COLOMBIA
French hostage said to be alive
BOGOTA -- A rebel leader freed from jail at the request of French President Nicolas Sarkozy said kidnapped French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt was alive and well, and that the rebel leader would soon travel to Cuba.
Rodrigo Granda, the so-called foreign minister of Colombia's largest rebel group, told Agence France-Presse that Mrs. Betancourt was still in rebel hands.
Mrs. Betancourt was a senator running for Colombia's presidency when the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) kidnapped her and an aide in 2002.
